Poor Ugly Hutch Pictures

Here are some pictures of the project I'm starting.  I have the pictures titled "ugly hutch" and "ugly hutch door" on my Mac.  I really shouldn't be so unkind to my soon-to-be beautiful hutch.  Right now it lives in what we euphemistically call "the Rose Room".  Some family member did stenciled flower borders out there in attempts to make the place more attractive.  It is actually our "junk room", but Rose Room sounds so much nicer.  As you can see, the back surface of the hutch is just plain.  That is where I will be adding the bead board which will be painted a lovely blue.  There are doors that go on the lower part, but I already have them off and have been working on them.

This is one of the lower doors.  As you can see, the knob was in the middle of the door (wierd) but I am plugging that hole and will add it at the edge of the door.  Also there was this totally unfinished groove around the perimeter, as you can see.  There was molding there maybe?  And there was molding on one of the three doors.  But I am replacing all the molding, so figured I would fill in these odd grooves to make it easier to attach the new molding.  I'm not sure what kind of wood this is.  It's not veneer either, YAY.  Maple?  I don't know, but it will soon be sporting a new creamy-white coat of enamel that will look much better.

So this morning I finished filling in the wierd grooves and holes on all 3 small doors, and have one sanded down.  This is going to be a process, but so far I'm enjoying taking my time with the project.

I wonder where this hutch came from?  Who started the process of refinishing it?  What treatment they were going to give it?  I like the idea that I'm continuing a family project.
